All Bottled Up

ONCE upon a time, bottles were bottles and nothing more. No longer! Nowadays, bottles come in a full spectrum of shapes, sizes, materials and designs. Hong Kong manufacturers lead the way with all the latest creations.

Continental Novelties Ltd makes a variety of clear and acrylic jars, pump-action spray bottles, lotion and single-drop pumps, and perm, ball and needle bottles.

One new style involves acrylic cream jars with matching caps, ranging from 58x45mm to 79x85mm. Plain-white versions cost US$0.21-0.61 FOB Hong Kong. These jars can be clear, frosted or various opaque colours with plain or silver-rimmed caps.

Continental recently launched a new range of plastic drinking bottles. Model SW0380EA/SP1 has a pull-push cap and costs US$0.37 per unit FOB Hong Kong.

Sales manager Colman Tsang says Continental representatives visit Japan yearly. "This helps us to update our new styles. It also helps with marketing since we sell many of our products to Japanese customers, as well as to Hong Kong pharmaceutical companies."

The company has a factory in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland. OEM projects are welcome, and corporate designs can be placed on products using hot stamping, screen printing and other special finishes. For OEM projects, the minimum order is 5,000 sets. Delivery requires 2-4 weeks.

Excellent Style Packaging (Hong Kong) Ltd makes many plastic containers, including lipstick cases, compact cases, bottles, pumps and sprayers, supplying mainly customers in the cosmetics industry.

The company offers acrylic cream jars in various colours with matching or silver-plated tops. A 20ml size, model CJ120, costs US$0.20; a 40ml size, model CJ140B, US$0.41; and a 200ml size, model CJ1200, US$0.54. There are also plastic bottles in the same style. A 150ml bottle, model FL5150, is US$0.25, and a 500ml bottle, model FL01500, US$0.31. All prices are FOB Hong Kong.

Marketing secretary Carmen Chan invites customers to choose their own configurations for these basic products. "We do our best to help customers if they want advice, for example, on launching a new range."

In Dongguan on the Chinese mainland, Excellent Style has a 30,000-square-metre, 2,000-worker factory, complete with a vacuum coating chamber, computer-controlled injection-molding machines and 3D co-ordinate measuring machines. Minimum order is 5,000 pieces per item. Delivery takes 30 days after order confirmation.

Wealth Enterprises (Far East) Ltd has been in the houseware and stationery business since 1989. An associate company, familiar to Wealth Enterprises directors for more than 20 years, handles the manufacturing, mostly at a factory in Dongguan.

"We have a very good relationship with our associate and keep tight control over quality," says director Judy Lui.

Among the houseware items from Wealth Enterprises are: a 3.5-inch acrylic salt-and-pepper mill, model 76010, at HK$6.85 (US$0.88); a 5.5-inch acrylic salt mill, model 76300, at HK$10.50 (US$1.35); and a 7.25-inch salad-dressing shaker with recipes on the side and a cork stopper, model 78510, at HK$8.10 (US$1.04). All prices are FOB Hong Kong.

Minimum order is 5,000 pieces per item, and delivery takes about 45 working days. Full containers usually are shipped from Shenzhen and part containers from Hong Kong, but this depends on customers' requirements.

While the main market for disposable items, like drinking straws, aprons and gloves, is the US, other housewares sell to German buyers and mail-order companies. "We look to expand our US market in non-disposable items," says Lui.

Kam Fung Int'l Enterprise Co makes plastic spray bottles as part of its bathroom accessories. They come in various shapes, including an apple and a teddy bear's head, and are available in several colours - blue, yellow, fuschia, white and green. Prices are HK$37-40 (US$4.74-5.13) per dozen FOB Hong Kong. Minimum order is 500 dozen bottles in a mixture of up to three colours.

The company uses GPPS and PP from South Korea, Thailand, Taiwan and Japan at its 160-worker factory in Shenzhen. Delivery time depends on quantities ordered.

Kam Fung marketing manager Abraham Chan says the company's products are priced for the lower-to-middle market. "However, the quality is good for this price range. Our customers are very happy with our quality and service," he concludes.

Everywhere, For Every Need

Paper Carrier Bags

ON city streets and rural roads, paper carrier bags sourced from Hong Kong companies appear in every corner of the world. They range from simple brown bags to transport the staples of life, like bread or vegetables, to the most ornately decorated bags in seasonal motifs or featuring beautiful fashion models.

Some bags could be considered works of art designed to carry valuable items, such as cameras, designer clothing or expensive fashion accessories. Hong Kong manufacturers and exporters, most with production facilities nearby in the Chinese mainland cities of Shenzhen, Dongguan or Guangzhou, fulfil the needs of customers in all markets.

"Who does not want to make a present look even more attractive when handed to a friend?" says Samsam Productions Ltd sales representative Tammy Chiu. Samsam has made paper carrier bags since 1987, now using its own 2,000-worker factory in Guangzhou, but does all its printing work in Hong Kong.

"We must achieve superior design and quality to make our products especially attractive to clients. While importing art paper from Japan and South Korea, we quote prices based on the different designs and paper quality. We find that our patterns and designs with a Christmas touch are most popular," Chiu says.

Minimum order is 3,000 pieces per design and size. The company can ship orders 45 days after confirmation. Its major markets are the US, the UK, Canada and Europe.

One company making a splash in the Hong Kong market is Rainbow Light Enterprise Ltd, a supplier of paper carrier bags to clients in all aspects of commerce and industry.

"Food, toys, electronics, cosmetics - you name it, and we supply an appropriate carrier bag," says sales executive Tamon Ma.

"Our biggest customers are in Hong Kong, where our peak season is just before Chinese New Year. Our selling points are high quality and superior service," he adds.

"The Chinese mainland is another big market, which we supply through our 500-worker factory in Zhongshan, not far from Hong Kong. Prices are based on clients' requirements, along with the size and material required for each bag. Delivery times are based on quantities ordered and stock in hand, but 10-21 days after order confirmation is the rule."

Large, glossy, colourful prints appear on bags from Smartpack Ltd, a manufacturer of such products since 1996, mainly at its factory in Dongguan.

"Our paper carrier bags are popular with participants at trade fairs in Hong Kong and overseas," says Smartpack manager Diana Lee.

"We emphasize quality and service. All our products are custom-designed by clients and entrusted to us. As for future plans, we hope to continue developing our OEM items.

"Usually our minimum order for paper carrier bags is 1,000 pieces per item, but in this business, prices, delivery times and minimum-order sizes all depend very much on the patterns and volume of an order," she adds. Smartpack's major customers are in Germany, the US and the UK.

Nine New Printing And Packing Co Ltd offers high-quality products from its own 400-worker, 6,000-square-metre factory in Shenzhen. The 12-year-old company needs a minimum order of 3,000-5,000 pieces. Delivery time follows order confirmation by 15-21 days.

"Our clients, mainly from the US, Europe and Australia, include all types of fashion boutiques, shoe stores, children's clothing shops and jewellery retailers," says spokesperson Eva Tang.

Winner Printing & Packaging Ltd's high-quality, offset-print bags and full-colour, printed, holographic bags are in high demand. "We have been in business since 1977, our workforce exceeds 3,000, and our factory in Shenzhen handles monthly production of 25 million paper carrier bags for major clients in the US and the UK," says company representative Pat Kwan.

"We have no particular target market, but there is a big demand for our Christmas, New Year and Halloween designs, and for our wide range of other designs," she adds.

Minimum order size is 5,000 units per item, with delivery 50 days after confirmation. Winner welcomes OEM projects.

Cushion Packaging

DEMAND for effective protective packaging prompts the evolution of sophisticated forms to shield delicate products from potentially damaging jolts, especially during transportation. As leading traders of countless consumer products, Hong Kong companies and their overseas business partners all have a strong interest in the latest cushion packaging.

Since 1993, Southern Victory Industries Ltd has produced moulded interior packaging from recycled paper for well-known brands of household appliances, telecoms, electronic and electrical equipment.

"Our main customers are from Hong Kong and Japan. They have factories on the Chinese mainland, Malaysia and Indonesia," says marketing manager Terence Yeung.

At Southern Victory's 40,000-square-foot factory in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland, 150 workers produce 800,000 pieces per month, recycling newspapers and cardboard from Hong Kong. Orders for a minimum of 5,000 pieces are rapidly filled.

"We have a very fast production time. It takes 7-10 days to make the moulds and 3-4 days for production," Yeung says.

The factory uses a three-stage quality-control system to ensure required standards. "We believe in providing our customers with the best service, quality and prices," Yeung adds.

With offices in Hong Kong and on the Chinese mainland, the company aims to expand its markets. "A lot of manufacturing is done on the mainland, so transportation and direct export from our factory to overseas customers is easy," Yeung says. Products are stacked efficiently to reduce transport costs.

Amid heightened environmental awareness, recycled products are increasingly popular. Greenworks Int'l Ltd, part of Starlite Holdings Ltd, also produces moulded packing.

"We formed the Greenworks division to use recycled paper to replace EPS foam," says assistant general manager Peter Ng. The company, with its strong focus on environmental safety, has won a Hong Kong Productivity Council Certificate of Merit for Eco-Products.

"While selling packaging products, we are trying to arouse the interest of the next generation in environmentally safe products," Ng adds.

Greenworks manufactures in Guangzhou on the Chinese mainland, where its 300 workers produce about one million pieces of pulp moulds per month.

"The company's advanced machinery comes from the US, the Netherlands and the UK. We obtained ISO 14001 certification in August, 2000, which confirms our high standards of management," says Ng.

Greenworks completes the entire process from moulding to finished products in 2-3 weeks, providing customers with high-efficiency service. The biggest customers are from the US and Europe. The company's packaging is useful in handling numerous consumer products, including computer peripherals, printers, audio equipment, vacuum cleaners, toys, cameras and mobile phones.

Executives at Flocking Industrial Co see a growing market for visible packaging. "There are a lot of advantages in being able to see the product," says sales manager William Cheung.

"Our main products are PVC boxes, blister packaging and flock trays. Our main customers for the flock trays are cosmetics and trading companies. The textured finish looks and feels good, enhancing their products," he adds.

Operating in Hong Kong since 1983, Flocking Industrial employs 500 workers at its 10,000-square-foot factory using raw materials imported from Taiwan. Since the factory is located in Shenzhen, a short journey across the mainland border from Hong Kong, the products are delivered quickly to Hong Kong, which is a major transport hub.

Within five days, samples can be produced in any shape or colour, according to clients' specifications. "We aim to improve on the customers' requirements. Our products have very fast production time," says Cheung.

Minimum orders of 3,000 pieces are filled in 5-7 days following approval of samples. Prices for the items pictured here range from HK$0.50-4.00 (US$0.06-0.51) FOB Hong Kong depending on size and complexity.

"Our market is about 50% in the US and Canada, with most of the balance in Hong Kong," says Cheung. There are also customers in Australia and Taiwan, with plans to expand into more markets, notably South Africa and South America.

For more permanent, sturdy packaging, Nadfinlo Plastics Industry Co Ltd produces blow-moulded, plastic-tool cases, mostly sold to power-tool manufacturers, but also popular for DIY tool sets, instruments and gardening equipment.

Created in 1990, Nadfinlo operates two mainland factories: one in Shenzhen and the other in Kunshan, near Shanghai. The company has earned a solid reputation based on a conviction that process and people are critical aspects of making high-quality, cost-effective products.

"We have a vertically integrated production line and are one of the only companies in blow moulding capable of providing a really complete turnkey solution," says Nadfinlo managing director Wally Sze.

Lead time to create new moulds is about 30 days. Minimum order is 5,000 pieces. "We have a lot of machines, so we can produce at maximum efficiency and competitive prices," Sze adds.
