Attractive packaging has a hugely important role attracting the attention of retail buyers and Hong Kong box and paper suppliers have this sector under wraps.
For example, one of Asia's leading corrugated paper display producers, Guang Li Paper Products Ltd, has been in the business for more than 12 years. Mostly, the firm supplies high-quality custom display units and a wide range of other paper products to international clients that include famous European, American and Asian brand names.
"We started out in simple carton boxes for local manufacturers," says Senior Sales Manager Helen Ng. "For the past decade or so, however, we have steadily developed a presence in overseas markets. The focus now is on attractive paper-based display boxes, and we have many different styles to offer."
She mentions that the company uses raw materials from the US, Australia, Asia and the Chinese mainland. "Any particular item might feature materials from a combination of those sources," she adds. "In addition, we source various plastic accessories and metal hooks to suit different designs, and we can handle any specific request for special fittings."
Printing is also an important process. "We mainly do offset printing, and this accounts for the finish on about 90% of all of our display units," she states. "We can also offer Flexo printing for matt cardboard boxes."
Business is presently stable. "There are not too many firms operating at the same level as us," Ms Ng observes. "Everything is on an OEM basis, and we generally work with overseas customers, from Europe in particular, who are looking for a better- quality product or a larger display panel."
The display panels meet various needs. "We have tabletop models and others that are floor-standing, in the popular bin style," says Ms Ng. "Some models may have fibreboard backs for hooks or even aluminium slats to support heavier display products."
The firm's catalogue contains a range of dump bins, trays, 'side-kicks', shelves, pallet displays and even stand-alone figurines. "Most of these are suitable as promotional aids at trade fairs," Ms Ng says.
The US remains the biggest market for Guang Li Paper's display units, although in recent years many new customers have appeared from other markets. "Longer term, we still hope to develop Europe as our second-largest market," she adds. "In Europe, our prime targets are the UK, Germany and France. In Asia, we are looking at Japan."
The company participates in the annual Canton Fair in Guangdong in April and October, in addition to attending trade events in the UK and Japan. "We are also focusing more on trade shows on the Chinese mainland, and retaining some interest when opportunities arise to attend fairs in Germany," Ms Ng adds.
She says that Guang Li Paper's mission statement is to always provide good quality and good service. "There is no real future in low-end goods," she opines. "The low end is far too competitive and offers far too little profit. Our target is to stay in touch with new technology and continually upgrade the quality of service and design capabilities."
Dedication such as this should serve Guang Li Paper well in its endeavours no matter the state of the market.
