Printing & Paper Products
Aesthetic appeal and functional practicality typify the latest paper and printing products from Hong Kong
Sporting eye-catching patterns, images and colours, today's printing and paper products showcase endless possibilities for creativity.
A galaxy of attractive options, for example, propels Max Fortune Industrial Ltd, whose decorative yet functional items range from bags, boxes, party plates and napkins to gift wrap, greeting cards, notebooks and stationery.
"We produce almost every kind of paper product," says Sales and Marketing Director Movie Lau. "We have a huge library holding 10,000 designs. As many customers want us to use the same design on different products, we have amassed a wide product range."
Some designs resemble classic images, such as one for Christmas showing Santa Claus toting a big toy bag and standing next to a scarf-clad snowman. Others qualify as sophisticated, bold or ultra-modern.
"We excel at creating paper product sets for holidays or other festivities, among other categories," Ms Lau claims. "We coordinate our whole range to meet customers' needs."
Max Fortune has a daily production capacity of 1.6 million paper bags - its best-sellers - in addition to 600,000 rolls of gift wrap.
"People like paper bags," Ms Lau explains. "They're part of many traditions, just as Christmas cards are."
The firm employs a 10-member design team in Hong Kong. "Our designers studied at universities overseas and they understand the tastes and requirements of customers in markets such as the US and Europe," Ms Lau notes.
While many enterprises are downsizing amid the global economic slowdown, Max Fortune is planning expansion. "We will open two new factories on the Chinese mainland in 2009," Ms Lau advises, adding that the firm operates three factories on the Chinese mainland and another in Vietnam at present.
That is unsurprising given Max Fortune's strengths. "We've been in the paper products industry for 15 years and have a good reputation," Ms Lau says. "We always quote fair prices and we offer reasonable quality."
Creativity is another success factor for printing and paper products, especially when they are for kids, as Giantco Printing Co Ltd well knows. The enterprise offers a huge selection of glitter stickers - many with 3D "bubble" aspects - as well as sticker albums and page kits.
"Children, mostly in the 3-12 years age range, use the DIY stickers to decorate pages and albums. Each page can be like an educational game," explains Sales Manager Clive Siu.
Some stickers depict animals, vehicles, planets and stars, pirates or spooky Halloween images. Others show letters to spell out headings or messages.
"Buyers also like sketchbooks, back-to-school items and DIY products," Mr Siu observes, adding that Giantco's biggest markets are the US, Australia, Japan and Canada.
The company introduces at least 15 new products every three months - and not only for youngsters. "We also have items such as epoxy stickers for use on cell phones, iPods or laptop computers," Mr Siu says.
An A4-sized sheet of stickers from Giantco, for example, costs about US$0.25 FOB Hong Kong, depending on the model. "Many are even less expensive," Mr Siu notes.
"Very often, a customer indicates a preferred price and our designers will create with that in mind to make everyone happy," he says. "I always call my clients to learn what kinds of items they'd like for the coming season."
Buyers seeking quality paper packaging options must also check out the range of rigid foldable boxes from Golden Horse Offset Printing Fty Ltd.
"These boxes have been great hits," says Marketing Manager Mandy Chan. "Ordinary rigid boxes don't fold while ours do, so customers like them."
She explains that customers once had to use lots of rigid boxes and that created storage problems. "Now, these foldable boxes are convenient to store. Folding is easy, and so is assembly."
The boxes can hold such items as cosmetics, jewellery, candy, watches and gifts, while methods for closing and folding vary. Model GH8061, for example, uses a magnetic side-closure and GH8073 features a diamond-shaped top-closure.
"These models come in any colour, pattern, shape or size that the customer needs," Ms Chan says. "We sell to customers who want their own packaging, and to department stores that need lots of rigid boxes, and we focus mainly on Europe."
Proficient at both OEM and ODM, Golden Horse highlights the latter. "We develop so many designs," says Ms Chan, adding that the company has a Hong Kong-based design team. "Our designs make it difficult for customers to shift their orders to a competitor."
Such original, delightful works of art on paper are certain to add colour to life and capture the imaginations of consumers the world over.
