Decorative Bags

Shopping bags with animal print designs and plastic handles from Bela Best Int'l Ltd make attractive packaging for products.

FOR shopping, for gifts, for business and for style, decorated bags can add a splash of colour or a bold statement. With trends looking for more innovative designs, Hong Kong manufacturers continuously introduce new ideas and broaden the range of possibilities in creative packaging.

Bela Best Int'l Ltd, for example, specializes in PP bags with bold designs. "We employ an extruding rather than a blowing process. The advantage is, the bags are strong enough to carry heavier goods and can be re-used while still looking high-value," points out Belinda Hsieh, managing director.

These bags come with the in-house BBI brand or private labels. They are made at an ISO 9002-certified 20,000-square-metre factory in Shenzen on the Chinese mainland. OEM accounts for 70% of all orders.

"We have many designs for PP shopping bags, mostly designed by customers, while there are also many options for the handles, such as transparent PVC tubing or die-cut PP," she elaborates.

Bags range in price from about US$0.20-0.50 each FOB Hong Kong. Minimum order value is US$5,000, for delivery 45 days after confirmation. Bela Best also makes PP files, photo albums, binders, sheet protectors, CD holders and boxes.

In operation since 1960, Glory Moon Greetings Cards Co Ltd has a great deal of experience producing handmade paper goods. "Our success in handmade greeting cards provides valuable experience applicable to making decorative bags," says spokesperson Georgina Au.

Production is six million gift bags per month from a 50,000-square-metre factory, employing 2,300 workers, in Guangdong Province on the Chinese mainland.

Under the Glory Moon brand, in-house designers produce a huge selection of bags, with more than 1,000 designs in the company's catalogue.

Au says customers prefer doing business with Glory Moon because "we are a one-stop shop for all kinds of handmade paper products, paper stationery and greeting cards." Main markets include the US and Europe.

The wide variety of materials used, from global sources, includes different types of paper, polythene and foil. Prices for bags vary depending on the design and order size, while the minimum order value is US$10,000. Delivery is 30-40 days after confirmation.

Max Fortune Industrial Ltd designs and produces paper bags under the Colourmax brand. Other products include Christmas cards, musical cards, boxes, stationery and gift-wrap. The company has its own lines and provides OEM services.

Max Fortune targets the high-end market, hoping to avoid "fierce low-end market competition", says marketing manager Movie Lau.

"We have a team of in-house artists to observe changes in trends and we have new designs almost every day including innovative add-on accessories for bags," she adds.

"We offer fresh and new ideas that others cannot," she claims. "Customers do not want plain bags any more, and prefer them with bold and innovative designs."

Max Fortune has two factories, on the Chinese mainland. In sum, these plants employ more than 3,000 workers, occupy more than 300,000 square metres and have a daily capacity of 600,000 bags.

Delivery takes 21-30 days for orders of US$8,000 and more in value. Lau says prices, available on request, are highly competitive.

Samsam Productions Ltd, established in 1987, managed to expand its turnover to HK$117m in 2001-2002. Major markets include Europe and North America, and managing director Simon Li says the mission is "to deliver value-for-money products and high quality services to worldwide customers".

More than 80% of Samsam's production is ODM in nature and requires use of a large variety of materials such as embossed or die-cut paper, foil, glitter or PP, and special handles such as ribbon, metal or bamboo.

The company's catalogue includes more than 2,000 bag designs and themes including floral, abstract, baby shower, and for Easter and all the other traditional festive seasons.

"We keep pace with new designs and trends faster than our competitors and grow and improve continuously," says Li.

Samsam's 500,000-square-foot factory employs 2,400 people in Guangzhou on the Chinese mainland. Prices start at about US$0.10 per item, depending on the design and materials used, a minimum order is 3,000 bags, and delivery is 45 days from order confirmation.
