Eco-Friendly Packaging(HKTDC Packaging, Vol 02,2005)
Their sample portfolios are bulging with an array of eco-friendly options such as recycled paper, non-wood paper and environmentally friendly PET and PP that not only offer attractive displays but can also be used repeatedly.
Most of these products are produced by savvy Hong Kong packaging industry players at their factories on the Chinese mainland, where low manufacturing costs ensure quality products and competitive pricing.
One company taking advantage of these trends is Hip Sing Packaging Products Fty Ltd, whose product portfolio includes PET and PP folding boxes and bags for a variety of products.
"The demand for eco-friendly packaging has increased about 30% compared with last year, with both PET and PP equally popular," says promotion officer Fannie Chan.
The 17-year-old firm has a 28,000-square-metre, ISO 9001-certified mainland factory in Shenzhen that processes eco-friendly PET and PP, which comes mostly from Taiwan and Korea, for buyers in the US, Germany, Australia, the mainland and Hong Kong.
Hip Sing's PP packaging finds its way into folding boxes, document holders and shopping bags as well as the back cards, while PET packaging is used for delicate products requiring transparent boxes.
"To provide better service, we offer a lower minimum order quantity of 5,000 items, an important consideration for packaging for gifts and premium items,'' Chan claims, adding that delivery is "1-2 weeks" after order confirmation.
Continental Packaging Ltd, meanwhile, concentrates on producing paper packaging, especially corrugated cartons and paper pulp mould trays for high-end products such as electrical appliances and mobile phones.
"We offer a one-stop shop service, including producing packaging, printing and assembly for customers," says business development manager Evelyne Hung. "We also use recycled materials in our packaging."
Continental uses paper pulp from the mainland, Europe and Australia, and elsewhere in Asia.
These are processed at the 22-year-old company's 350,000-square-foot mainland factory in Dongguan for shipment to the US, Europe and the mainland.
Continental's products include books, packaging boxes, gift boxes, carton boxes, display boxes, paper shopping bags, pulp moulds, puzzles, gifts and paper premiums and a wide range of other paper promotional items.
"Our principal markets for paper pulp mould tray packaging are the US, Europe and Japan," Hung says, adding that delivery times depend on destination.
Equally committed to paper-based packaging is Sun Fung Environment Packaging Ltd, which produces trays and boxes for cellular phone and electronic product manufacturers in Japan, the US and the mainland.
"We use wood paper and recycled paper materials from the mainland and the US," says spokeswoman Virginia Wong. "While many Japanese and Korean customers prefer to provide their own designs, we often provide customers with original designs, offering them more options."
Sun Fung's ISO 9001-certified, 30,000-square-foot factory in Dongguan employs 150 workers and delivers two weeks after confirmation.
Taking a different approach is Creative Pak Industrial Co Ltd, which focuses on paper and PP bags for cosmetics and gift items because, managing director Felix Lam claims, US companies prefer PP.
"Bags with this material are not included within anti-dumping regulations," Lam observes, noting that Europeans prefer PET. "We source materials from Japan, Korea, the Middle East and Thailand. We use recycled paper for paper bags and inserts in PP bags."
Established in 1979, Creative Pak operates a 30,000-square-metre mainland factory in Gaoming that employs 600 workers and produces 350 metric tonnes a month.
Lam says the minimum order quantity is 5,000-10,000 pieces, depending on colour and size, delivered 4-6 weeks after confirmation. "We supply the bags for McDonald's plastic toys, so our production facility and processes have been approved by McDonald's," he adds, noting that Creative Pak also provides casual bags to Burberry, Castle, Toyota and Mercedes Benz.
Clear and frosted PP folding boxes are a particular strength of Hip Lei Packaging Products Fty Ltd, a relatively new player established in 2003. "Our packaging is used in stationery and household accessories in our main market, Europe," explains senior merchandiser Joey Wong, adding that Hip Lei also exports to the US, Japan, Australia and the mainland.
Materials, which also include PET, are sourced mostly from Taiwan for processing at a 50,000-square-foot, 200-worker factory in Shenzhen that requires minimum orders of 5,000 units. "One of our advantages is our fast turnaround time, which means orders can be delivered 10-12 working days after confirmation," Wong adds.
Illustrating yet again that environmentally-conscious buyers don't have to wait for high quality, competitively-priced, eco-friendly packaging from Hong Kong manufacturers.
