Enterprise Vol 2, 2010: Supplier Spotlight: Bags
Enterprising trading company PS One (HK) Ltd initially benefited from the combined talents of executives from Hong Kong and Singapore, but now has entered into joint-venture manufacturing agreements with factories on the Chinese mainland.
“I am from Singapore, so it was quite easy for us to get a foothold there,” relates Sales Manager Alan Ooi. “We started out with backpacks, followed by other types of bags and leather goods.”
Many of these items were custom-made, leading to a high degree of specialisation. “Our Coca-Cola cooler bag, for instance, with its high-quality finish and thick insulation, is typical of our product range for mid- to high-end markets,” says Mr Ooi.
He recalls how, with the assistance of Hong Kong partner Jims Lam, the firm then started to operate further afield by adding popular lines such as leather cardholders, key holders, caps and hats.
“We participated in our first Hong Kong exhibition in 2003, and gained immense experience and exposure that allowed us to understand the needs of overseas buyers,” Mr Ooi says.
Well-known brand names started to appear on many of the firm’s products made with materials such as nylon, polyester and leather. “You can see the likes of DKNY, Zara, Barbie, Harrods, and Audemars Piguet, plus Polar bags and premiums bags displaying the Coca-Cola and Pepsi-Cola logos,” Mr Ooi says.
“Our bags and goods have a longer life expectancy as they are of a higher quality than many other similar products on the market,” he adds. “We also offer belt bags, purses and small accessories for shoulder bags, made from PU or genuine leather according to the buyer’s needs.”
There are benefits from operating as a trading firm. “For example, we can act as a one-stop shop for buyers for a wide range of items,” Mr Ooi claims. “We can also seek out suitable suppliers to meet price and quality needs. We can work with any factory prepared to meet our standards.”
PS One exported large quantities of premiums bags in 2008 but expects the emphasis to shift this year. “Recycled shopping bags and recycled caps are in demand at present,” Mr Ooi reveals.
“At the higher end, items such as padded wine bottle carriers — similar to the ones we make for the Hong Kong Jockey Club — are quite sophisticated and paired with expensive wines to form special gift sets,” he adds. “We also have custom-made jewellery display boxes with two-layer compartmentalised interiors.”
Looking to the future, he says that PS One is taking to the eco-friendly road. “We now offer shopping bags made from recycled materials,” Mr Ooi says. “Our design team is also looking into production of a range of recycled items for school children and teenagers who are very environmentally aware.”
PS One’s ‘green life’ approach has already seen the first eco-friendly products made from rPET. “We use the name Greco for our green ecology lines,” says Mr Ooi. “Although not formally launched at this time, everything is on course and awaiting confirmation from the patent registration office. Initially, this new line is destined for the Hong Kong market.”
PS One certainly demonstrates the benefits of two heads being better than one, and the firm appears set for a successful future.
