Enterprise Vol 4, 2010: Supplier Spotlight: Gifts & Premiums

Design Delights

A manufacturer of gifts and household items, acting as a trusted OEM/ODM supplier to some of the top brand names in the US, the UK, Europe and Asia, has scaled down in-house manufacturing operations and today concentrates on R&D and design.

Profit Charm (FE) Ltd, established in 1993, sees a bright future in contract manufacturing. “In making this move we have been able to reduce costs, including the size of our self-owned factory facility,” explains Managing Director Joe Wong.

“It’s another way of doing business, and one where we can continue using our expertise and take more control over the type of product we want to handle.”

He notes that contract business is very different from OEM. “OEM customers want very low prices and usually travel to the Chinese mainland to seek out manufacturers whereas our quality demands a higher price. However, while we do use PC-FE as our logo/brand name customers are free to stipulate their own markings.”

The firm has retained its specialised tooling and plastic injection and mouldmaking machines. “We make the samples and prototypes at our Chinese mainland facility where we have 3D drawing facilities,” says Mr Wong. “We have own designers in Hong Kong and we employ freelancers in the UK and the US.”

Drawing on its past experience, Profit Charm has not strayed from gifts and premiums — with the likes of coffee mixers.

“We have a model designed for making cappuccino, where a vibrating stem is placed in the cup,” Mr Wong says. “This is a very sellable item and makes a great gift or promotional item.”

Other standard lines include mini-vacuum cleaners that are powered from a car dashboard for dusting and cleansing car seats, or at home to help clean a computer.

“We have models suitable for both wet and dry operations, plug-in powered or battery-operated and rechargeable,” says Mr Wong.

There is also a sunflower-like fan sitting in a pot that sells well thanks to it coming in a handy size and weight that helps prevent the product from being knocked over. “Actually, the base is highly polished and so it adheres to a flat surface with a kind of suction effect,” Mr Wong explains.

The fan, along with the firm’s other standard lines, is designed to last as well as perform. “We can achieve this through good design, efficient processing of raw materials and final assembly,” he emphasises.

“We also make air ionisers, a range of massagers adapted to different parts of the body and all-purpose LED torches, including a hands-free model that is slung from the neck or hangs on a belt,” adds Mr Wong. “Then there are radio and loudspeaker sets designed for use with iPods and MP3/MP4 players, while a range of his ‘n’ her hair trimmers provides interesting gift options.”

With business moving smoothly, Profit Charm sees little need for long-term planning. “Our way of production depends on the market demand and trend,” Mr Wong states. “Things are always changing, and we are continually bringing out new products to match. Our investment in tooling is substantial, and is complemented by our professional approach to quality goods for a quality, sustainable business.”

Profit Charm certainly has a lot to offer in the gifts and premiums sector.
