Quality packages can whet a consumer'sappetite, and Hong Kong manufacturers are helping to satisfy the hunger for top-notch packaging for foodstuffs and beverages.

Among them is Sunnyart Packaging Material Ltd, which provides beverage bottles and associated services.

"We are specialists in the manufacturing of PET bottles, PVC/PET shrinkable sleeves and OPP labels, all made using our advanced eight-colour printing machines," says managing director Reddy Ng

"We offer through-train packaging services, from the design and production of bottles and sleeves to a sleeve-inserting service and topping up with the required contents, and finally to exporting the packaged products to our customers," she elaborates, noting the integrated services can lower production costs for customers.

"We also welcome orders for individual processes as well as OEM," she adds. "We aim at improving the image and quality of our customers' products with our outstanding designs and professional techniques for bottles and sleeves."

Sunnyart purchases plastic from Japan and the US, and processes it into individual bottles. "If no new tooling is required then delivery is 10-14 working days after order confirmation," Ng says.

The company's customers include beverage manufacturers from Canada, the US, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines and Hong Kong. Set up in 1993, Sunnyart runs an ISO 9001-certified, 3,500-square-metre, 200-worker factory in Panyu on the Chinese mainland.

On a different tack, Long Choi (HK) Co Ltd supplies laminated packaging bags for food. "The multiple layers ensure the bags are airtight and provide good protection for the contents," says marketing manager Alan Wong.

Bags on offer include a vacuum bag made with nylon (NY15) and PE. "This model is usually used for holding cold meat," Wong points out.

For dry foods, Long Choi provides a highly transparent bag made from BOPP and CPP, a metallic bag with aluminium sandwiched between BOPP and VMCPP film, and an aluminium bag with PET12, aluminium (AL7) and PE layers. "All of these bags are usually used to hold dry snacks like biscuits, crisps, bread and instant noodles," says Wong.

"Frequently, customers provide the bag design and we suggest how many colours and which printing technology to use," he adds. "We can print logos and patterns on the packets to make them more attractive and more expressive of the contents."

The 14-year-old firm turns out 10,000 square metres of laminated bags per month at its ISO 9001-certified, 5,000-square-metre, 200-worker factory in the mainland's Chao'an.

"Our customers are generally food manufacturers in Hong Kong and on the mainland," Wong says, "and the materials used to make bags come from various sources, such as Japan and Korea. The lead time is generally 10-15 days."

Another maker of laminated food bags is Rainbow Light Enterprise Ltd, whose colourful packets are used for a wide range of food items including cookies and fish balls. The materials we use meet the US Food and Drug Administration's food and hygiene standards," says production manager Damon Ma.

A typical bag from Rainbow will usually feature three layers. "The outer layer is OPP or BOPP, the middle layer comprises the printed materials, while the inner layer is CPP or CPE," says Ma. Other materials, such as PET, VMCPP, VMPET, and aluminium (AL7 and AL9) are also used in Rainbow's food bags.

"UV light cannot penetrate aluminium and so the metal is excellent for food bags where the contents must not be exposed to sunlight. Also, food in aluminium bags usually keeps longer, and the bags can also be boiled," Ma says.

Rainbow supplies about 5-10 million food packaging bags a month from its mainland factories in Dongguan and Zhongshan, which have a combined workforce of about 300.

Minimum order is 30,000 bags. "If tooling is required then the lead time is 3-4 weeks, otherwise it is 10-14 days," Ma says. "FOB Hong Kong unit prices range from approximately HK$0.10-0.60, depending on the material composition."

Established in 1996, Rainbow can design packages for customers as well as produce bags based on its own designs. The company sells to food manufacturers and trading firms in the US, Canada, Asia and Europe.

Also engaged in colourful packaging is Yuen Hing Polybags Co Ltd, which packages food and beverages such as candies, dumplings and coffee.

"Our fine printing helps improve the attractiveness of the packaged products," says managing director Raymond Kwok. "Our bags are also tightly sealed, which means that the contents will keep for longer periods."

The materials used include PT, PE, PET and PA from Japan, Korea, Taiwan and the mainland.

"Our direct customers are mostly food manufacturers in the US and trading companies in Hong Kong. Some of the traders sell our products on to places including the US, Japan, Australia and Europe,"Kwok says.

With 15 years' of experience in the packaging sector, the company requests a minimum order of 10,000 bags. Standard delivery time is 20 days after confirmation of order. Production takes place at a 100-worker plant in Dongguan on the mainland.

Showing that packaging products and services from Hong Kong are sure to serve up the best for food and beverage manufacturers.
