Gift Wrapping(HKTDC Packaging, Vol 02,2004)
In a world where presentation is everything, nothing conveys sentiment like an artistically and thoughtfully wrapped gift.
Gift wrap, ribbons and cards, available in a myriad of colours and designs, are a forté of the Hong Kong packaging industry.
Companies such as Confirm (Int'l) Enterprise Ltd manufacture garment and packaging accessories that are abreast of both current design trends and buyers' demands.
"Our company produces items that are very much dictated by market demand," states sales manager Jack Leung. "When people walk into a stationery shop, they are confronted by an amazing variety of gift-wrapping items, and we try to guarantee that customers have the latest products and designs."
Confirm's selection of gift-wrapping products includes ribbons, elastic ribbons, bows, rosettes and fastening tapes - all items that are firm favourites with consumers worldwide.
"Most of the items we manufacture are made of nylon or polyester, materials that allow for maximum manipulation and use by the end-user," Leung explains.
While Confirm does not have dedicated factory premises of its own, it does work in conjunction with specific factories located in Guangdong Province on the Chinese mainland and in Taiwan.
Confirm demands minimum orders of 3,000-5,000 yards per item and delivers within 2-3 weeks, depending on the item, to the US, Europe and the Chinese mainland.
"This allows our customers to have the flexibility to order several designs in manageable quantities and within a relatively short period of time," Leung adds.
"Looking to the future, I think the novelty ribbons and gift-wrapping items market will continue to grow as people celebrate more and more special occasions."
Another company that sees a bright future in the gift-wrapping industry is Levox Int'l Co Ltd, which claims to specialise in the provision of new, innovative products backed by excellent customer service.
Levox manufactures a variety of gift-wrapping items, including speciality paper and packaging materials such as holographic paper, 3-D plastic sheets and lenticular sheets.
Holographic paper in different thicknesses is ideal for use as wrapping paper, paper bags and paper puzzles, while 3-D plastic sheets make excellent cosmetic, accessories and sweet boxes, says founder and managing director K.Y. Tam.
"Lenticular sheeting is suitable for use as 3-D tags and decorations for toys and garments," he explains. "We source materials for our gift-wrapping items from Europe, Japan, the US and the Chinese mainland."
The 33-year-old company, which manufactures under the Levox brand and places no minimum order requirement on goods ordered, guarantees delivery in 30-40 days.
"Major markets for our products are currently the mainland, Hong Kong, Europe and Australia, where growing the market for speciality products is our main focus," Tam adds.
Meanwhile, ziplock, organiser and cosmetic bags manufactured from PVC, nylon and cotton are a specialty of three-year-old Jin Feng (Asia) Industrial Ltd.
"We produce a wide variety of PVC bags, which are perfect for any number of uses," explains manager Samuel Hui. "From carrying sports or beachwear items and safe storage of toiletries when travelling to the sealed, protective bags used to store camera parts or medications - the uses are virtually endless."
Jin Feng manufactures its extensive array of products at a 3,000-square-metre factory in Dongguan Province on the Chinese mainland that employs 300 workers and products 400,000 items a month.
These are sold in minimum order quantities of 3,000 pieces delivered 25 days after order confirmation to the US, the UK and France. "We will manufacture any design the customer presents," Hui insists.
He believes stitched bags will continue to grow in popularity, especially among women, who find these products perfect for transport and/or storage of delicate items. "With this in mind, we will focus on the cosmetic market in coming years," Hui explains.
There is equally positive growth and growing market demand for non-woven pouches, shopping bags and cotton woven shopping bags, according to Hostar Int'l Ltd.
"Hostar has experienced rapid growth in relation to our key products," claims merchandiser Joyce Kwok. "This has been especially notable with regard to our cotton shopping bags, which are perfect for customers who are environmentally-conscious and do not want to use the plastic bags issued at supermarkets and other retailers."
Hostar manufactures products from 100% PP spun-bonded non-woven fabric at a 100,000-square-metre ISO 9001-certified plant in Guangdong Province that employs more than 1,200 workers.
The factory features four fabric production lines, which can produce 12,000 tonnes of fabric per year. "We can produce any product the customer requires and match fabric according to colour swatches submitted by clients," Kwok says.
The four-year-old firm has its own cutting, sewing, packing sections and warehouses for its non-woven products, which are sold to the US, the Chinese mainland, Japan, Canada, the UK and Germany. "We have a minimum order requirement of 10,000 pieces for any of our products, and guarantee delivery within 15 days of order confirmation," Kwok concludes.
Obviously, gift-wrapping items from Hong Kong will undoubtedly continue to evolve as new materials become available and customer demand continues to grow in a world where presentation is everything.
