Drawing upon long years of experience, Hong Kong manufacturers offer plastic packaging items and related printing services to suit all needs
Plastic packaging is a ubiquitous feature of modern life and used for everything from food containers to electronic products. Nevertheless, there are specialist suppliers.
For example, Hop Lik Plastic Products Fty Ltd specialises in transparent packaging boxes made from a choice of PVC/PP/PET materials. The company's areas of expertise also include hot-stamping, offset and silk-screen printing.
The range expands to soft-crease folding boxes and various other box shapes, and the firm can also handle novelty jobs such as lenticular and 3D products, as well as holographic/laser packaging.
Hop Lik turns out some 15 million boxes and 20 million blister packs each month at its factories in Shanghai and Fujian Province on the Chinese mainland.
Boxes account for 70% of business, with the remainder consisting of items such as file folders, place mats and badge/card holders. The packaging boxes are used in the garment, electronics, cosmetics, food, toys and sundries industries.
Pricing is based on the size and thickness of the plastic, plus whether printing is required. As a general guide, prices range from about US$0.10-1.00 each FOB Hong Kong. Minimum order is 5,000 units for delivery 7-14 days after confirmation.
"Half of our products are made of PVC, 30% of PP and 20% of PET. Europeans want PP and PET because those materials are more environmentally friendly," says Eunice Cheung, manager at the ISO 9001-certified company that has been in business since 1982. Other export markets include the US, Southeast Asia and the mainland.
Established in 1988, Hip Sing Packaging Products Fty Ltd produces a wide range of transparent plastic packaging materials made from PVC, PP and PET sourced on the mainland.
Products include folding bags, tubes, soft plastic items, sheets, shopping bags, cases and blisters, and the ISO 9001-certified firm can tailor-make all of these in different shapes, sizes, materials and with different types of hot-stamping, offset or silk-screen printing effects.
"We can do packaging materials in rectangular, square, octagon or hexagon shapes, or any other, in sizes ranging from small to large," says marketing officer Elis Lee. "Rectangular is the most popular shape."
Prices start at US$0.05 for a cigarette pack-sized box with a thickness of 0.3mm, but vary according to printing requirements and the size, thickness and quantity of the material.
Medium-sized Hip Sing has a monthly output of about one million units at its factory in Shenzhen. PP and PET are its two best-selling plastics, and the minimum order is 5,000 units. Shipments go out 15-20 days after order confirmation to major markets in Germany, France, Spain and India.
Starting out as a producer of video and cassette parts and accessories when it was founded in 1985, Tak Fu Industrial (HK) Co Ltd is now a leading manufacturer of CD cases, PP DVD boxes, slim CD digitrays and about a dozen other related items.
CD jewel cases and slim CD cases are the two largest categories, with each accounting for 30% of the company's total production. DVD boxes and slim digitrays are next.
The CD cases and DVD boxes are available in a standard 142x125x10mm size, while three types of digitrays are offered: two models for the CD tray and one for the DVD tray.
"Both the slim CD case (5.2mm) and the DVD box can be ordered in green, blue, pink, orange or purple colours," says marketing manager Yoki Chan. Additional colour choices for the DVD box are black and translucent.
Other products are available in clear plastic or black, with PS and PP being the main plastic materials employed.
Priced in the low to medium range, Tak Fu's products are exported to Russia, South Africa, Hungary, Holland, Spain, Germany and the US. The firm has a minimum order size of one TEU, and delivers 2-4 weeks after order confirmation.
Meanwhile, Tung Hing Industrial Co, which has been manufacturing plastic packaging since 1983, concentrates on vacuum forming blister packaging and PET/PP/PVC folding boxes that are used in the cosmetics, toys, electronics and other industries.
Blister packaging is available in a choice of PVC/PET/PS/PP plastics. "Most of our customers want PVC because it costs less, although Europe only accepts PET," explains assistant manager Michael Tsang at the ISO 9001- and BSI-certified firm, adding that PVC accounts for about 70% of overall business.
A standard-sized blister measuring 30x15mm is priced at US$2 each FOB Hong Kong for orders of 10,000 pieces. A 20x5x10mm folding box sells for US$1.50 each for PVC, US$2 for PP and US$2.50 for PET, all based on 10,000 pieces. Offset printing, silk-screen and foil stamping services are also available.
The minimum order value is HK$10,000, and delivery to major markets in the US, Europe, Japan and Taiwan is two weeks after order confirmation.
For the perfect plastic packaging solution, buyers need look no further than Hong Kong for reliability, expertise, a wide range of products and competitive prices.
