Well Leader Industrial Co Ltd
|Well Leader Industrial Co Ltd is a highly successful manufacturer of bags, soft pouches and containers and enjoys an excellent reputation for quality|
Established in 1985, the firm enjoys an excellent reputation for delicate and quality products that are shipped worldwide from administration offices in Hong Kong and a 40,000-square-foot, 300-worker factory in Baoan, Shenzhen, on the Chinese mainland.
"Our first product was a very simple PVC zipper bag that was used to hold cosmetics items," says director Mony Yau. "Looking back, it now seems a rather rudimentary product. However, it was at the very early stages of the PVC bag industry and actually sold quite well."
Noting that significant changes have taken place in the intervening years, Yau says the firm now offers some 30,000 types of bags, from cosmetics bags to promotional bags and packaging bags to medical bags.
"Quite new items include medical equipment bags and golf ball bags that we manufacture for stores such as Marks & Spencer in the UK," Yau adds, revealing that more than one million pieces of bags to hold items of underwear were delivered there recently.
"Each year, I travel widely to window-shop because we are doing business in many countries - the US, Western and Eastern Europe, Korea, Japan and also the Middle East for example. It is important to know what is going on and try to discern the upcoming trends," Yau says.
The Well Leader marketing team regularly attends trade fairs in Hong Kong, Europe and the US, and visits Japan occasionally. "But we also investigate lesser explored markets such as Russia," Yau says. "I went to Russia in 2003 to make a start with the large, Eastern European market where today we have excellent connections - for example, in the Czech Republic and in the newly-formed Baltic countries."
Well Leader has a walk-in system that enables production of a sketch of the required product even though it might still be just an idea in the customer's mind.
"We are strong in design," Yau says, "and we can input the data from the sketch into our computer to generate a full 3D drawing. It takes two minutes only. The customer can also vary different components and elements and observe the changes, including the costs if they change the raw materials as well."
This most useful application of technology is typical of the Well Leader approach to customer service and high efficiency. "Another strong point," Yau says, "is our tight control over quality. Our mission is to target at zero defects supported by prompt deliveries."
The Internet has also proved highly useful. "A potential customer can access our online catalogue and get some idea of the product he wants," Yau advises. "The next step is to work with us on the desired design and agree on the size, materials and colours."
The range of raw materials has also widened, she adds, and today includes coloured, matt and glossy PVC; EVA; 70D, 190T, 210D, 420D and 600D nylon; nylon mesh; micro fibre; satin with PVC backing; imitation leather PVC with cloth backing; organza; canvas; and colour transparent PVC.
The company keeps samples of all the materials it uses to show to customers. "We usually keep some evidence of each project because it is very useful to demonstrate to buyers what we can do and because they may want to use a similar material," Yau explains.
Working with new materials as they become available also means continually upgrading the different machinery required to finish bags. The latest machinery additions are top-of-the-line computer-controlled sewing machines.
Staying in touch with the trends, providing useful customer support services and delivering quality goods is clearly the winning line for Well Leader.
