Gift Boxes

Camford Printing & Mfg Co Ltd creates endearing gift boxes adorned with ribbons or ornaments to resemble gifts in themselves.
BOXES to hold most types of merchandise can be as important as the contents. Nowhere is this truer than in the giftware industry. While protecting and storing, boxes provide clues as to whether gifts are expensive, fun, trendy or even edible. Sometimes consumers may choose to keep attractive boxes longer than the gifts inside.

Camford Printing & Mfg Co Ltd makes paper gift boxes to reflect well on contents. The company uses high quality paper and ink from Japan and Europe, along with finishing touches like ribbon and plastic ornaments, to create worthy boxes that can resemble gifts in themselves.

Launched in 1971, Camford offers gift boxes and stationery, making 300,000-500,000 items monthly at its factories in Hong Kong and on the Chinese mainland. Minimum order is 2,000 pieces for shipment after 25 days. Prices range from US$0.35 FOB Hong Kong for the Honey Bee gift box to US$0.61 for a Sportsdog model. Main markets are Germany and the UK.

Hong Kong Zhirun Art Package Co Ltd specializes in classic 'wooden' boxes. Made from modified density fibre (MDF), the boxes have minimal weight. "These are special because they are lighter than real wood boxes and because the designs are nice," says manager Connie Chan.

Zhirun Art generates up to 40,000 units per day at its 150-worker factory in Guangzhou on the Chinese mainland. The company sources MDF from New Zealand and PVC from Taiwan. Minimum order is 3,000 pieces, and shipment is after 30 days.

"Our main market is the Chinese mainland, but we are developing prospects in the US and European markets," says Chan.

Kwong Tai Printing Co makes striking paper boxes and bags. "We have our own artist, and customers provide the designs," says coordinator Simon Tsui.

Founded 20 years ago, Kwong Tai operates a 200-worker factory in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland. Its leading markets are the Chinese mainland, the US and France.

"We have no minimum-order requirement, and prices vary with quantity and design," says Tsui. The products are middle-to-high end.

"Our quality is very good, and we do our best to meet clients' requirements. We can also make complicated designs," Tsui adds.

For jewellery gifts, attractive packaging definitely heightens the drama and anticipation. Founded in 1993, E Wilhelm Ltd makes quality jewellery and watch boxes, offering two new lines per year.

"We have six-person design teams in Germany and on the Chinese mainland," says managing director Tom Lau. The paper and PVC jewellery boxes blend classic and contemporary styles, doing justice to anything they carry.

The company's 500-worker factory on the southern Chinese mainland produces 50,000-70,000 pieces per month. Its Wilhelm brand appears most often in Europe. Minimum order is 2,000 pieces for shipment after 30 days. Prices range from US$0.20 FOB Hong Kong for a necklace box to US$0.75 for a watch box.

"We source paper and imitation leather from Europe, but if clients want lower prices we try to comply by sourcing from Japan or elsewhere in Asia," says Lau.

"We strive to provide the best possible customer service by reacting quickly to clients' needs and by helping them to develop new ideas," adds Lau.

Universal Metal Plastic Trading Ltd makes plastic, paper and wood boxes for jewellery and watches. This five-year old enterprise has a 2,000-worker factory in Dongguan. Raw materials come from Japan and Europe to create three million pieces monthly. Minimum orders are negotiable, and shipment is after 30-45 days.

Artech Printing Ltd is an 11-year-old supplier of gift boxes, cartons and paper bags for numerous items. Its simple, no-nonsense designs lead to easy-to-use packaging.

"We offer competitive prices, good service and on-time delivery," says sales manager Dick Mui.

The company has a factory in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland, along with offices in Hong Kong and the UK. Minimum order is 5,000 units. Main markets are the US, Europe, Australia and Japan.

Food & Beverage Packaging

Packaging with bold, traditional patterns emerges from Winner Printing & Packaging Ltd's production lines on the Chinese mainland.

CONSUMERS cannot do without food and drink, most of which cannot do without packaging. Hong Kong manufacturers routinely supply food and beverage packaging as diverse and positively received as the flavours inside.

New Island Printing Co Ltd creates packaging for taste-pleasing items ranging from brandy, whisky, wine and soft drinks to chocolate, potato chips and fried chicken nuggets.

The company has supplied boxes and bags for Remy Martin XO, Old Parr and other leading brands. "With our many machines and human resources, we can produce an extensive range," says executive director Conrad So.

The packaging is made from single- or both-side-coated art paper, wood-free paper, E-flute paper, PET, PT or PVC. Raw materials come from Japan, the US and Europe.

"Customers as far away as the US and Australia place orders with us, rather than their local suppliers, even though they must pay for shipment. Such is the appeal of our good workmanship and competitive prices," So says.

Minimum order is 5,000 units for shipment within 3-8 weeks, depending on complexity. Europe and the Chinese mainland are also important markets.

Founded in 1964, New Island is an ISO 9001-accredited supplier with factories employing 3,000 workers in Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland cities of Dongguan and Shanghai. An additional factory in Dongguan will begin production in 2003.

Familiar brands of crisps, fish balls and noodles appear inside bags from Rainbow Light Enterprise Ltd, a maker of about five million food-packaging units monthly. Raw materials like oriented PP, cast PP, PE, aluminium and vacuum metallized polyester, come from Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan and the Chinese mainland.

"Our food-grade packaging bags meet the US standards of FDA," says production manager Damon Ma.

"Minimum order is usually 50,000 pieces per model, but there is flexibility. We sometimes accept 20,000-piece orders to be more competitive," he says.

Rainbow employs 800 workers at factories on the Chinese mainland. Shipment is after two weeks for repeat orders and 3-4 weeks for new orders. The leading markets are Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland, Canada, the US, Europe and Japan.

"Our service is good, all the way from artwork through to production," Ma says.

"A customer can provide us the artwork. If needed, we can advise on design, including which are the most suitable materials. Any customer new to packaging or without a design department can simply tell us the requirements, and we will make design suggestions and supply the artwork," Ma adds.

Launched in 1980, Rainbow Light has made food-related bags for more than three years. "Our food packaging sales figures are rising," Ma says.

Long Choi (HK) Co makes packaging bags for snacks, chocolate, candy, noodles, meat dumplings and other foods. The materials include BOPP film, CPP film, VMCPP film, nylon film and polyester film from Japan, South Korea and the US.

"We have a laboratory where we check if there is too much ink after printing and if bags are well-sealed on three sides," says manager Iris Lam.

Ten-year-old Long Choi operates a factory with 100-200 workers in Shantou on the Chinese mainland. Shipment is 20-30 days after order confirmation. Main markets are Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland and Japan.

Yony Tai Plastic Bag Printing Fty Ltd offers laminated and resealable bags.

"Each laminated bag has two layers. The inner one is made of CPP and protects the food. The outer layer is made of OPP on which print looks better," says director Kit Hung. The resealable bags are made of PE.

Other raw materials include BOPP, PO, PP and PET. "We source from many different places, such as Thailand, India, Japan, Taiwan and the Chinese mainland," Hung says.

Established in 1989, Yony Tai sells mainly to Hong Kong and European customers. Its factory employs 100 workers in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland. "We will soon open a bigger factory there," Hung says.

Blister Packaging

Tung Hing Industrial Co makes specialized protective packaging like this flocked blister tray (back), electro-plated tray (right) and conductive tray (left).

MOST packaging is designed to grab consumers' attention. Blister packaging, however, has a more functional role to ensure products remain safe, untouched and unbroken. Hong Kong suppliers are adept at providing functional and solid, yet attractive, blister packaging for all manufacturers' needs.

Established in 1983, Tung Hing Industrial Co makes various plastic boxes, PVC tubes and soft PVC pockets. Its blister products, like conductive trays, flocking trays for cutlery sets and trays for food, medicine, toys or home appliances, are made to order.

The company also makes crash helmet shells, sliding and carded sealing blisters, and clamshell or three-fold blisters. Its materials range from PVC, PS, PP, PET, PE and ABS to gold and silver electroplated film, plant film, anti-static film and PS conductive film.

Marketing manager Tsang Yuk Wing says Tung Hing serves its customers as a one-stop packaging shop. A printing subsidiary in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland supplies other packaging needs like paper and blister cards.

"Many of our customers are based in Hong Kong and on the Chinese mainland so we can deliver packaging straight to their factories," Tsang says.

Minimum orders depend on blister size and moulding. Shipment is after 14-30 days, depending on quantity.

After sourcing base materials from Taiwan, the US and Hong Kong, Tung Hing creates its packaging at factories in Shenzhen, Dongguan and Shanghai, all on the Chinese mainland. Last year the Shanghai factory received ISO 9002 certification.

Wallmark Enterprise Co Ltd makes various packaging, bags and cases, including blister items useful to makers of household and electrical appliances like razors, thermometers and computer peripherals. Among the highlights are white or see-through plastic trays priced at HK$0.60-3.20 (US$0.08-0.41) FOB Hong Kong per set.

Minimum order is usually 10,000 pieces, applicable to regular or repeat orders. "Materials and moulding are other considerations," says chairman Simon Wong.

For regular orders, shipment is after about two weeks, depending on mould requirements.

The company has an ISO 9001-certified factory employing 1,700 workers in Huizhou on the Chinese mainland. Many of its leading customers are from Japan with manufacturing operations on the Chinese mainland.

Wallmark works with clients to ensure their packaging needs are fully understood and satisfied. "Japanese customers require especially high quality and sometimes send their own quality-control staff to our premises. We are very happy with this. As we tell them, our offices are their offices," Wong says.

The company also engages in print packaging, including for many US customers.

Perfectech Int'l Packaging Products Co Ltd has engaged in packaging and printing since 1984. It, too, offers one-stop solutions. Along with blister packs for food and household products, it makes printed blisters like calendars and masks.

The company sources PVC sheets, plastic resin and paper from Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, the US and the Chinese mainland. Production is at its ISO 9002-certified factories in Zhongshan and Zhuhai on the Chinese mainland.

According to senior sales manager Patrick Ip, the company wins praise for its delivery pace, product quality and competitive prices. "Shipment is normally after more than seven days, but within two weeks. As for quality, since a single mistake can affect the final product, we apply strict quality-control measures at each stage," he says.

Tai Fai Plastic Mfg Co also promises quick delivery, aiming to ship all blister packs within 10 working days of order confirmation. Its packaging items, made from clear PVC and PS, flocked PS or PETG from Taiwan and the US, come from a 500-worker factory in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland. Most are made for electronics or toys.

"We normally ship directly to our customers' premises in Hong Kong or on the Chinese mainland," says sales manager Choy Man Cheung. The usual unit price is HK$0.50-2.00 (US$0.06-0.26) FOB Hong Kong.

"We work closely with customers to fully understand their packaging requirements. We also believe quality is vital to good customer relationships," Choy says.
