Paper Bags(HKTDC Packaging, Vol 01,2006)
All Wrapped Up

While a gorgeous-looking paper bag certainly attracts attention, Hong Kong's manufacturers offer more than mere appearance.
For example, S.C.P.P.C. Ltd - a specialist in packaging and paper products since 1968 - offers quality products and services as part of a winning formula, according to marketing manager Marcus Chow.
"Although we usually work on an OEM basis, we also take a proactive role in initiating ideas for design and development," he states.
"This is very much appreciated by clients in the US and the UK, some of whom have been with us for more than 10 years."
He says S.C.P.P.C. serves a wide clientele from toy manufacturers to telephone makers, while individual design houses are major buyers of the company's gift bags.
"We are capable of providing a one-stop service at our 150,000-square-foot factory in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland - everything from pre-press to printing and from overall or spot UV coating to laminating and die-cutting," Chow elaborates.
S.C.P.P.C. also regularly updates its ISO 9001-certified facilities with new technology, including the latest computer-to-plate (CTP) system, which, Chow says, has dramatically speeded up production.
S.C.P.P.C., which imports most of its paper from Korea, Indonesia and Finland, enjoys an average monthly production value of some US$1.5m. The minimum order is 5,000 bags, and delivery is usually achieved within 20 days of confirmation of order.
Innovatively, offering print and packaging management is the successful tactic of Tact Group Ltd and a major selling point to its many brand name customers in the international household electronics business.
Managing director Richard Ho notes that this centralisation concept helps customers standardise their packaging quality worldwide. "Having the capability to provide such service can be attributed to the experience and expertise we have accumulated since starting out in 1996," he says.
"We take charge of developing the design, artwork and colour separation processes for packaging materials used by our clients in different international markets," he adds. "If we are not doing the subsequent printing and assembling, we will provide the films and clear specifications to the overseas printer."
The core operations of the Tact Group take place at its 10,000-square-metre workshop in Shenzhen. Printing is subcontracted to approved, reliable firms.
"Minimum order quantity is flexible, and delivery time depends very much on the nature of the enquiry," says Ho. "Our turn-around time can be very fast, and in most cases we work according to the customer's required shipment date."
Meanwhile, a relative newcomer to the paper bags sector is four-year-old Direct-Pack Industries Ltd, which has already built a strong European customer profile supplying leading brands in the cosmetics, perfume, wine and cheese industries.
Producing a myriad of packets and containers - from cotton, Kraft paper and PE bags to non-woven and PVC bags, Direct-Pack places quality first.
"We have two factories in Dongguan," says marketing manager Candy Cham. "One specialises in manufacturing paper bags and the other plastic bags. We exercise full control over the entire production process, from incoming material inspection to the monitoring of printing and bag construction."
Cham notes that good design also helps to reflect quality and build reputation. "We take pride in having an excellent creative design team capable of meeting customers' individual requirements," she says. "We well understand that colours, choice of materials, handles and accessories are all important to creating appealing packaging that complements the intended content or advertise client messages."
Direct-Pack requires a minimum order quantity of 2,000 bags and Cham says delivery can be accomplished within 2-3 weeks of order confirmation.
Another well-established manufacturer shipping quality paper bags, paper boxes, gift boxes and paper products to the US, Greece, Italy, Indonesia and Australia is 17-year-old Kwong Tai Printing Co.
"Today, our most popular item is the 100% recyclable Kraft paper bag - which we started producing in 2002 in response to a growing environmentally-conscious market," says sales manager Calvin Luk.
"A year later," he adds, "we registered our own brand - ARTPACK - to further promote our Kraft paper bags to worldwide packaging distributors and retailers."
Luk says that the half handmade and half machine-made Kraft bag, which comes with a base card that supports up to 10kg compared with the more common 3-5kg machine-made variety, is highly sought-after.
"Our advantage lies in the skills of our 200 workers at our 5,000-square-metre factory in Dongguan. We are fast and flexible enough to accept small OEM orders for as few as 1,000 bags. We can also produce other paper bags in very specific shapes that can be made only by hand," elaborates Luk.
Kwong Tai sources Kraft paper from the US, Canada and Sweden; coated paper from Indonesia; and cardboard from Korea and the mainland. Producing 1.5 million paper bags a month, the company can deliver 2-3 weeks after order confirmation.
With Hong Kong packaging suppliers striving for perfection in design, quality and service, there is little wonder why they have world buyers all wrapped up.
