Modern printing techniques are a far cry from the ink-and-lead days of yore. This is not lost on Triangle Link Ltd, a specialist in printing and paper products that also accepts special orders for printing on unusual and even exotic materials.
"We handle everything from stationery to packaging boxes, all of which are 100% paper," says Sales Director Boris Yu. "But not just simple paper items as we can also handle special effects and laminating, and we can even work with fabrics such as satin, leather, cotton and nylon."
He also mentions photo albums, sets of drawers and desk tidies that are made from cardboard, packaging suitable for cutlery gift sets, and wrappings for licensed products such as Hello Kitty and Disney - in the form of Mickey Mouse illustrated notebooks - and even memo stickers.
So good are many of the finishes provided that the company experiences huge demand for fancy and attractive boxes for cosmetics, jewellery, watches and other high-end products.
The firm implemented a series of expansion plans to meet the ever-diversifying needs of clients, increase the production capacity, and more efficiently fulfil orders.
"Large investments were made to facilitate advanced machinery to ensure we were not merely abreast of market trends but well-equipped to meet new ones," says Mr Yu. "By being aggressive, we are able to maintain rapid growth despite a fast-moving and competitive environment."
There is a seasonal nature to the business. "Once a customer becomes familiar with our production capabilities, special orders begin to flow in," says Mr Yu. "For example, promotional or premium-related demands for boxes with Christmas tree decorations or other festive motifs like St Valentine's Day."
Occasionally, Triangle Link is asked to produce some rather unusual items. "We were once asked to supply a series of printed boxes that included a cushion. In that case, we subcontracted the cushion fabrication part of the job."
More typical, though, are the smart packaging boxes that are perennially in demand from Triangle Link. "For example, model 06CF paper box is part of a fancy stationery series that targets teenage girls," says Mr Yu. "We use pretty pink tones and silk-screen printing to achieve a glitter finish for greater appeal. We also make these box sets with handles, and others that are more toy-like, and the series includes jewellery boxes, and a small suitcase for girls to use to store personal belongings."
The 06QY series of containers targets customers in the watch, jewellery, perfume and food industries. "Customers can decide on the shape and size of container they desire and supply their own artwork," Mr Yu says. "With a custom interior, this means that all our paper boxes can fit a wide variety of products."
The firm has an annual turnover in excess of US$10m, earned mostly from exports to some 20 countries. "We have always exported about 99% of our total output. For example, today about 50% goes to the US, 20% to 25% to Europe and the balance to the rest of the world, especially Korea, Japan and Russia," Mr Yu explains.
As a printer/paper products maker, Triangle Link is clearly strongly affected by increases in the cost of paper and cardboard. "This is a major problem," declares Mr Yu. "Generally, our products are of a high standard that requires the best raw materials. We import from Korea, Japan, Indonesia and the Netherlands mostly, because the cardboard from those countries is of high quality and very suitable for the type of packaging items we supply."
To reach new customers, Triangle Link attends exhibitions such as the Hong Kong Gifts & Premium Fair in April. "Unfortunately, recent results have not been too good as some buyers, those who would normally come to Hong Kong, are bypassing it and heading straight for the mainland where they can, undoubtedly, obtain a cheaper price," laments Mr Yu. "But that is business. We will always maintain our standards."
Those standards, he insists, is the reason why Triangle Link can survive. "A glance at our range reveals that we try harder and make more than simple boxes," he declares. "We are prepared to spend time with clients and to work with them in reaching the product most suitable for their needs. We can work from scratch or with a predetermined sample, and we discuss colour options in great detail to ensure the client is aware of all the possibilities. These services are not usually available on the mainland."
Clearly proud of its reputation, Triangle Link Ltd appears set to box on successfully for many years to come.
