Plastic bottles of various shapes and sizes from Golden Well OK Industrial Co Ltd sell mainly to the Chinese mainland and the US
Plastic has long been used in packaging and continues to remain popular, thanks largely to Hong Kong manufacturers who keep coming up with high quality, innovative designs using the latest manufacturing technology.
For example, cosmetic packaging specialist Excellent Style Packaging (Hong Kong) Ltd manufactures a host of plastic products from make-up boxes to cream jars, bottles for skin-care bottles and dispensing pumps.
Besides working on OEM orders, the company's in-house R&D department also helps customers develop exclusive technical concepts, designs and products that are responsive to market trends.
"Many international brands choose from our in-house collection as we offer more stylish varieties than our counterparts," claims marketing officer Jeff Chan.
Excellent Style's 30,000-square-metre, ISO 9001-certified factory in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland provides a full range of processes, including silk-screen printing, spray painting, vacuum plating, UV processing and hot stamping.
According to Chan, the company's vertically integrated operation, with specific strength in moulding, has been a major draw card in attracting new customers since it was founded in 1997. "Today our initial Hong Kong market has grown to include Europe and Australia," he adds.
Excellent Style uses PP, PMMA, PE, ABS and SAN imported from Japan and Taiwan to manufacture up to three million items a month. A minimum order is 10,000 pieces and delivery takes 20-25 days after order confirmation.
Yau Bong Polybags Printing Co Ltd also started small, expanded overseas in the 1990s and today exports its plastic packaging and shopping bags to Japan, the US and Europe.
"We work directly with big chain stores and hypermarkets in these countries," manager Janice Ng observes, adding, "I believe it is our reliability, good quality and prompt delivery that keeps us thriving."
She maintains that for Yau Bong, good quality is a result of combining hi-tech machinery with reliable material sources. "Our fully computerised, 12-colour, gravure printing machines provide vivid colour with high definition," Ng explains.
"We source LDPE from Japan, Singapore and Saudi Arabia, HDPE from Malaysia, and PP from Korea to ensure our bags offer smoother texture and higher transparency."
Yau Bong takes approximately 10 days to deliver minimum orders of 1,000 items, courtesy of a 120,000-square-foot, ISO 9001-certified mainland plant in Shenzhen that can manufacture 3,000 tonnes of products a month.
Though working mostly on OEM orders, the company has a design team that provides technical advice to customers. "Even though customers may sometimes come up with great designs, they might not know the production constraints," Ng explains.
Tung Hing Blister Fty also works proactively with its clientele when developing products, which consist of plastic blisters and PVC, PET and PP folding boxes in all sizes and shapes that are sold to the US, Europe and Japan.
The company is a subsidiary of Dongguan-based Tung Hing Holding Co Ltd, which employs more than 2,000 workers in six companies in Dongguan, Shenzhen, Suzhou and Shanghai and produces in excess of 10 million items a month.
"We have four blister factories, two plastic sheet factories and an offset printing factory that also handles paper packaging," explains marketing manager Tsang Yuk Wing. "These comprehensive facilities enable us to provide our customers with a one-stop service."
The 21-year-old company requires a minimum order value of US$10,000, which is usually delivered 20 days after confirmation thanks to its continual investment in advanced technology to improve production processes.
"Our quality meets the very stringent requirements of Japanese buyers," Tsang says, adding, "Three of our factories are also ISO 9002 certified."
A similar commitment to quality has won Shih Ka Plastic Boxes Fty many loyal customers in markets such as the UK, the US, Australia, France and Japan since it debuted in 1989.
"We use PVC, PP and PET from Taiwan and the US," says manager Brenda Ting. "All our products are die-cut, and buyers can tell the difference by our distinctive workmanship."
Shih Ka manufactures a full range of folding boxes, tubes and soft PVC bags that are often used for gift packaging, providing economical designs as well as an OEM service.
"Besides producing attractive, appealing packaging, we also think of designs that save material and space since our customers need to further package their products for final delivery," explains Ting.
Shih Ka's 50,000-square-foot, ISO 9002-certified factory in Shenzhen can produce up to three million folding boxes monthly, which are available in minimum quantities of 5,000 units delivered 2-3 weeks after order confimation.
This commitment to developing and introducing innovative quality products at highly competitive prices ensures that Hong Kong manufacturers will keep wrapping up plastic packaging orders worldwide.
