Recycled Materials(HKTDC Packaging, Vol 02,2003)
This series of recycled paper gift bags in eye-catching floral and fruit patterns is produced by Winner Printing & Packaging Ltd
Taking a leading role in natural products, Hong Kong offers a host of items fashioned from recycled materials including both paper and plastic. Attractive and economical bags, boxes, notebooks, cups and saucers are increasingly finding their way to international markets.
Wrapping up lots of business is 14-year-old recycled materials veteran Hang Tat Plastic Bags Mfr. "Working with recycled materials is no different than using any other materials," says sales supervisor Fanny Lo. "The advantage is the market perception, where demand is quite strong."
Hang Tat products are made from recycled PE, PP, PO and PVC and (non-recycled) BOPP, fashioned into shopping bags, T-shirt bags, through-string bags, multi-fold bags, aluminium foil bags, electrostatic control bags, vacuum packing bags and various shrinkable materials.
"We have more than 20 varieties of shopping bags made from recycled materials," says Lo. "We can print in a huge range of colours and designs or according to client requirements."
Popular items include a non-woven through-string bag (model NW324 at FOB Hong Kong US$0.23), a PP shopping bag (K9002 at US$0.32), a CPP through-string bag (CP240 at US$0.115), and a candy bag (CP277 at US$0.035).
Hang Tat's major markets are the US, Japan, Singapore and Italy. Production takes place at a 250,000-square-foot mainland factory in Zhongshan employing 200 people. "Minimum orders depend on the dimensions the buyer requires," says Lo, adding that delivery takes place 15-20 days after order confirmation.
Another well-established manufacturer, providing quality products such as paper gift bags, premium boxes, children's play sets, board books and all sorts of paper-based items, is 26-year-old Winner Printing & Packaging Ltd.
This veteran producer is a winner of the Hong Kong Print Award, having secured both Champion and Merit prizes on several occasions. "We put a lot of effort into our designs," says marketing manager Patrick Chau. "Many clients accept our designs, while a lot of OEM clients have their own requirements."
According to Chau, the recycled paper bag segment is rather specialised. "Currently, products using recycled materials account for about 5% of our total business," he says. "It is important to use totally recycled content as this is usually what the market demands."
Production takes place at an ISO 9001-certified, 500,000-square-foot, 3,000-worker mainland plant in Shenzhen. "Our major markets include the mainland, the UK and the US," adds Chau, who says production is aided by more than 10 printing presses, computer-to-plate systems and all kinds of pre-press and finishing machines. Prices and delivery times are available on application.
Moving into a new range of biodegradable and environmentally friendly products is Welkin Corp (HK) Ltd. General manager Wong Cheng Kok says the 26-year-old company has a solid market niche for cups and saucers, plates, trays and all manner of containers.
"Our main ingredient is sugar cane waste," he says, "and that makes us unique." This raw material is sourced from several suppliers on the Chinese mainland. "It is relatively inexpensive, and so our product prices are highly competitive," adds Wong.
Typical FOB Hong Kong prices range from US$0.012 for a cup/saucer combination to US$0.073 for a food box with five pressed compartments. These products are food-grade standard, waterproof and suitable for microwave use.
Welkin can manufacture up to three million items a month, the total depending on the type of orders. "We have a minimum order requirement of 50,000 items," Wong adds.
Production takes place at a 120-worker mainland plant, while delivery is about 30 days after order confirmation. Major markets are Japan, Korea and France. "Production is highly automated, and we have our own designs or can work to customers' requirements," says Wong. "Most of the goods are white, but any colour is acceptable."
When it comes to handmade recycled paper products, Hucais Group Co Ltd has something for everyone. Established in 1989, this manufacturer exports shopping bags, gift and cosmetic boxes and notebooks and diaries to global markets.
Typical unit prices for popular products include a round paper box (model BOHM001R) at US$0.75 FOB Hong Kong, a heart-shaped version (BOHM003H) at US$0.75 and an oval-shaped model (BOHM002O) at US$0.92.
Hucais also offers a broad range of paper bags, including the popular BAHM001/002/006 models priced from US$0.20-0.80 per piece. "Prices depend very much on the size and finish," says sales manager Hugo Leung.
Apart from quality, he adds, the secret lies in the printing process. "We output our own films and use the latest offset machines equipped with UV and in-line, water-based coating facilities."
Automatic processes in the vertically integrated factory include die cutting, varnishing, laminating, embossing, silk-screen printing and thermo graphics. There is also an intaglio printing station and automatic binding machines.
"We can deliver orders for 5,000 items and more about 40 days after order confirmation," says Leung. Production takes place at two mainland plants in Humen, Guangdong Province, and another in Taian, Shandong Province, that employ 700 workers and provide 60,000 square metres of ISO 9001-certified manufacturing space.
Buyers seeking to wrap their products in something different - and popular - know that recycled materials from Hong Kong are a great option and natural winners with consumers worldwide.
