Tins(HKTDC Packaging, Vol 01,2007)
This popular series of house-shaped tin box (right) in various sizes is typical of the colourfully-patterned tins available from Chiu Luen Metal Works Co Ltd
The 1985-established firm Lakco Packaging Ltd caters to its customers' demands for variety in size, pattern and function with a selection of pressed tinplate containers with hinged or sliding lids or the traditional loose-top. There are also round tins for watches.
"We have more than 20 years' experience in the packaging field," says managing director Paul Cheung. "We are highly experienced in making inserts or lining as well and can also make any required plastic parts, which are added bonuses for buyers."
Lakco also makes jewellery boxes, optical cases and watch and pen boxes, and introduces new products each month. It mainly uses 0.23mm rustproof tinplate from Korea and Japan, while finishing includes offset printing, silk-screen printing and embossing.
Minimum order value is US$3,000 for delivery to major markets in the US, the UK, Spain, France and Italy 30 days after confirmation of order. The production capacity is two million items per month from a 15,000-square-metre factory in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland.
Also producing a variety of tinplate items is Chiu Luen Metal Works Co Ltd, which was set up in 1979. Typical of its popular and colourful tins is model H12-01/4, a house-shaped tin box (0.23mm-thick) available in various animal designs and containing smaller tins inside.
"A green colour was chosen because of its association with health and happy families," says sales executive Kris Luo. "Buyers tell us that the item is highly popular with people of all ages."
Rustproof tinplate is imported from Japan, Korea, Australia and Belgium, in various thicknesses from 0.19mm-0.35mm. New, moulded items are introduced four times per year, and the company can help clients develop design ideas. "Recently, we have dedicated our efforts to introducing new styles in higher quality," comments Luo. "We work with such well-known OEM customers as The Walt Disney Company, McDonalds and Hello Kitty."
Production takes place at the company's ISO 9001-certified, 11,500-square-metre plant in Hui Zhou on the mainland. The minimum order is 7,200 pieces per style, for delivery approximately 40 days after order confirmation to major markets such as the US and Europe.
Moulded boxes of all types are a major line at Evergreen Plastic & Metal Mfy Ltd, which produces almost 30 different types made from various materials including rust-proof tinplate (0.23mm-thick) from Japan and Korea.
A popular, in-demand item is model 150C (19.5x16.5x8.1cm), which acts as a tin lunch box and comes complete with a plastic handle and a metal lock. Available in plain colours, clients can customise the basic design to suit their own needs.
"Using multiple-colour offset printing techniques, we can produce beautiful artwork on these boxes," explains marketing executive Benny Poon. "This particular line has won us many large orders due to the attractive results." Silk-screen printing is also available.
Also popular are a round, mesh tin box that can be used to display watches or similar retail items, while Poon says current trends include an increase in demand from customers for tin containers suitable for wine, chocolates and candies.
The company introduces one or two new items each month. "While most of the new design ideas mainly come from our clients, we help by ensuring the finished design will not have any production difficulties," Poon says, adding that Evergreen's OEM clients include Pierre Cardin, Citizen, Agnos B and Hello Kitty.
Founded in 1983, the company has two factories on the mainland with a combined production capacity of two million items per month. Minimum orders of 3,000 pieces are shipped to main markets that include Europe, the US and Japan 20-30 days after order confirmation.
Advance Packaging Mfg Ltd focuses on moulded and pressed tinplate boxes and packaging. There is a huge variety of styles, designs, finishes and shapes available, mostly featuring 0.23mm rust-proof material from Japan, Germany and the mainland.
"A new and popular item is model PG816, a polygon tin with decorative spoon," says sales manager Swing Chan, introducing another interesting item: model CD857, which is a case capable of holding 24 CDs. "Many CD cases come in a round shape but ours is square, making it unusual. It is also a favourite among clients." Offset and silk-screen printing options are available.
Clients may include names such as Gap, Esprit, Snoopy and Barbie, which are just a few of the company's high-profile OEM buyers. "Set up in 2000, we have been successful in establishing a strong presence in major markets in Europe, the US, Southeast Asia and Turkey thanks to our high-quality products and excellent service," Chan says.
Production takes place at the firm's factory in Dongguan on the mainland. "Both the monthly production capacity and the minimum order requirement depend on the product," says Chan, adding that delivery is usually 30-35 days after confirmation of order.
Clearly, by partnering with Hong Kong manufacturers buyers can easily meet all their tin packaging needs.
