Aedas Limited - Sunny Bay Station
Known for its work on infrastructure projects, Aedas Limited garnered two significant awards for its Sunny Bay Station design for the Mass Transit Railway Corporation (MTRC). Along with winning the Hong Kong Institute of Architects' Merit award, it also received a Green Building Award for the station's incorporation of sustainable design elements. As the gateway to Hong Kong Disneyland, Sunny Bay embodies a strong sense of drama and magic with its grand central space. The open air station also features a self-cleaning canopy arch that encourages natural air flow, reducing energy consumption by up to 30%.
Max Connop, Senior Associate with Aedas Limited, was the project architect responsible for overseeing the Sunny Bay Station. Along with the roof, additional green elements in the design include glass louvres near the top to further promote air circulation. Aedas worked with the Hong Kong branch of engineering firm Ove Arup & Partners to develop a high tech language for the station. It was proactive in a dynamic air analysis study to ensure optimal air flow, resulting in low running costs.
Since 1993, Aedas has 31 stations and 8 depots for 18 rail lines in Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and New Delhi. It is also contracted to work on 43 stations and 2 depots in Dubai. Mr Connop believes that Hong Kong service providers, particularly firms that specialize in infrastructure projects, offers a high degree of expertise in the international market. "We are extremely good at getting things done," he notes. "Good infrastructure projects are predicated on efficiency - a 'can-do' approach to doing things quickly."
With mainland China growing rapidly, Mr Connop is certain that to stand out from Aedas' competitors, his company must offer something unique to the market. "We offer quality in China," he states. "We offer credibility and dependability. China is in a state of flux right now. What Aedas is doing is offering an international standard of quality that can be delivered. Our clients are appreciative of our ability to push the envelope in China."
