Globex Industrial Co produces an array of practical tools and kits suitable for gardening, fishing, trekking and survival, and computer repairs.
THINK of the countless number of homes in the world and calculate the enormous demand for hardware. Dealers sourcing items for this attractive market segment need look no further than Hong Kong, a buyer's paradise with an impressive number of suppliers offering own designs as well as taking OEM orders.

Winfo Enterprises (HK) Ltd, set up in 2001, sells multi-tool sets made from stainless steel and other raw materials sourced on the Chinese mainland. The company manufactures 30,000 sets per month.

"We use special stainless steel and have an automatic hot-treatment production line and international-standard laser polishing equipment," says manager Philip Wong.

A multi-tool survival kit, model WFG3, contains emergency items. "There is a hammer, a pair of pliers, a knife and a file at US$2.94," says Wong.

Another kit, model WF9802E, contains a pair of scissors, a regular knife and a saw-toothed knife. "This is especially for plant trimming in the garden and is priced at US$1.64. Meanwhile, for computer buffs, multi-tool kit WF9806CTP comprises everything necessary for repairs and is priced at US$1.61," he adds. All prices are per kit FOB Hong Kong.

Winfo's factory, in Guangdong Province on the Chinese mainland, occupies 50,000 square metres of land and employs 1,000 workers. A minimum order is 1,200 units, for shipment 35 days after order confirmation, and major markets include Europe and the US.

Another manufacturer, Precision Mastech Enterprises Co, makes a range of digital multimeters, clamp meters and power supplies.

The company recently launched digital multimeter, MS8207. "This model is for measuring the voltage of home electrical appliances," marketing manager Connie Keung says. "Unlike other multimeters, this is shaped like a small notebook computer and looks very attractive." The FOB Hong Kong unit price is US$52. Also popular is electrical tester MS2600, which is for testing household current. Price is US$17 each FOB Hong Kong.

Raw materials used by Precision include ABS and PVC sourced from Taiwan. The minimum order value is US$8,000, and the lead time is 30 days. Approximately 300,000 multimeters, usually sold under the Mastech brand name, reach major markets including Germany, France, Italy and the US each month.

Established in 1987, Precision operates a 500-worker factory on a 20,000-square-metre site in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland. Both the production facility and the group's Hong Kong head office are ISO 9001-certified.

Offering a wide range of bathroom accessories and mixers, made with brass sourced on the Chinese mainland, is Main Plan Ltd. Launched in 1992, Main Plan manufactures at an 800-worker factory in Ningbo on the eastern Chinese mainland.

Apart from towel rings, towel bars, toilet paper holders, robe hooks and toilet brush holders, the company's catalogue also features glass shelves. "We offer these for holding perfumes, shampoos and other odds and ends in the bathroom. They come in tempered glass with brass brackets," explains marketing executive Vincci Lau.

"Our products are easy to install at home, definitely DIY fare for the enthusiast. They are also easy to clean, often just with plain water," she says. "While brass does not rust, we also do the chrome plating under strict control to ensure it retains its lustre," she adds.

Apart from its own designs, according to Lau, Main Plan also gets inspiration from long-term European customers. "We sell a lot under our own Delong brand to buyers in Spain, Germany and Italy," she says.

A minimum order is one TEU for shipment 30-45 days after confirmation of order. "We are keen to develop more export markets," Lau stresses.

For another interesting range, Kinchiff Investment Ltd makes handles, including knobs and pulls, hooks, bathroom accessories and builders' hardware. "All articles are DIY items and easy to put in place," says merchandising manager Amy Yip.

In operation since 1981, Kinchiff manufactures on the Chinese mainland at a plant occupying 75,000 square feet and employing 500 workers. Both its Hong Kong office and the mainland plant are ISO 9001-certified.

A minimum order is 1,000 units for shipment within 30 days of order confirmation. "Our biggest market is the US, while we also export to Europe and Southeast Asia," says Yip.

Materials include zinc alloy from Australia, and iron, stainless steel, brass, copper, aluminium, glass and acrylics from various other sources.

For a broad range of locks, hardware and furniture fittings, Kin Kei Hardware Industries Ltd offers zinc alloy models suitable for cabinet handles, cam locks, cabinet locks and drawer locks.

According to manager Leung Yui Fai, the company turns out 100,000 units of each model per month, while the minimum order value is US$4,000 and the lead time is 45-55 days. Sales are worldwide, often under the Volar brand.

Founded in 1973, Kin Kei employs about 200 workers at its 3,000-square-metre factory in Zhongshan on the southern Chinese mainland. Raw materials include zinc alloy, brass and steel sourced on the mainland, and stainless steel from Japan.
