Just The Job
There is no sign of any let-up in the demand for hardware and DIY home improvement and maintenance products from Europe and the US, and Hong Kong manufacturers offer an excellent range.
ONB Hardware Fty (China) Ltd, for example, is an established manufacturer and exporter of brushes and painting tools. The firm has operated its own production facility in Huizhou on the Chinese mainland since establishment in 1992.
Today, ONB Hardware services clients in every corner of the world and particularly in the US and Europe. "Given our expertise in production and quality control, we are in a good position to supply prime quality goods at competitive prices," says assistant manager Angela Law.
"Our main line is artistsO brushes, for which we use real wood for the handles and natural hair D either white bristle, red sable, ox, goat or camel hair D for the brush. In addition to supplying standard items, we also provide tailor-made products and are constantly bringing out new items to meet current demands," claims Law.
ONB Hardware also offers a caulking gun in two versions: the skeleton type with a hexagonal rod, and a covered one with a round rod. There are large and small utility knives, and tarpaulin for hobby gardeners, general-use paintbrushes; cosmetic brushes, painting tools, roller frames with covers, bucket grids and other painting accessories. Law says the minimum order is 5,000 pieces, and delivery is 35 days after confirmation of order.
2004-established Hong Kong Goto Ltd is a subsidiary of the more mature Well Tack Trading Development Ltd. Goto has factories in Zhongshan in the mainlandOs Guangdong Province. "We manufacture an extensive range of products for the bathroom, everything from taps to basins," says manager Ivy Au.
"The raw materials come from mainland suppliers as they are cheaper, and comprise quality stainless steel, glass, ceramics and stone. We have our own design team and provide customers with high quality items. All are accompanied by certification guaranteeing their quality for the respective country."
The company supplies manual and automatic sensor taps (16 models). Patterned glass catchments come in a modern, smart look, and numerous colours. There are also basins set in cabinets.
Noting that the GOTO brand name is used according to requirements, Au says, "Business is really good and our factories are very busy. We attended a fair in Dubai last December that proved very worthwhile and last October we exhibited at the Hong Kong Trade Development CouncilOs hardware fair."
The minimum order is 50 pieces and delivery takes 60 days after receipt of L/C. The Middle East is a major destination, followed by Europe, and ISO 9001-certified Goto offers CE and the Authority of Water Services Department (HKSAR) approvals.
Pacific Sky Industries Ltd, established in 1997, mainly produces bags of all kinds. On a smaller scale, this company also offers a range of general-purpose knives N in the Swiss Army knife tradition N handy kitchen tools, multipurpose tools and penknives.
"In the DIY line, we make pocket tools, grips, pincers and other foldable items that have various cutting and sawing edges and can grip all kinds of things," says project manager Jolly Ng. "We also package sets of tools in boxes."
Pacific Sky also offers a garden tool set that includes various cutters and a pair of gloves N particularly suitable for keen gardeners.
Raw materials, mostly steel and plastic, come from the mainland for processing at a 200,000-square-foot mainland factory in Ningbo that employs up to 600 people. Minimum order is 1,000 sets and delivery takes 25-35 days following confirmation of order to main markets like Europe and the US.
A voltmeter is often a very useful tool to have on hand, and 1987-established Metek Industrial Co Ltd produces a wide range. "We make voltmeters in two main categories," says marketing manager Terrance Wu. "They are testers and detectors."
Testers are precision instruments for reliable electrical readings, while detectors are for the repairman trying to locate screws or avoid water pipes and/or metal bars. Many DIY enthusiasts appreciate having such a detector to hand. "Our latest product is a digital detector that gives the location of an object by determining different material densities like wood and metal," says Wu.
Metek also offers an adjustable A/C voltage tester with pocket clip plus audio and visual signalling, an electromagnetic field detection instrument, and an ultrasonic-based distance meter with a laser pointer. There is also a multifunction tester for use with metals, voltage and to check against dampness.
Raw materials such as ABS come from Taiwan for processing at the firmOs ISO 9001-certified plant in Dongguan. Minimum order value is US$3,500 per model and delivery time is 45-55 days. Main export markets are the UK, Germany and Italy.
Clearly, whatever the need in the DIY/hardware line, Hong Kong will have a tool that does the job.
