A good toolbox is indispensable either at home or in a car, as anyone who has ever experienced any kind of household or road emergency will vouchsafe. Shrewd consumers around the world need look no further than Hong Kong for reliable and quality hardware, gardening tools and do-it-yourself products to bring order to their lives.
Catering to the needs of automobile users is Good Hope (Hong Kong) Ltd, which manufactures a variety of air compressors as well as auto accessories like car polishers, safety hammers with seat belt cutters, and vacuum cleaners.
Nearly 95% of the company's sales comprise OEM and ODM orders for its air compressors, which have attracted a number of deals from renowned car manufacturers like BMW and Toyota.
Managing director Paul Wong attributes the company's success to the adoption of an engineering matrix programme in its product development process.
"The development system not only helps increase efficiency in product creation, but also allows us to foresee related problems in advance."
Backed by more than 40 years' experience, Good Hope has positioned itself as an engineering-oriented manufacturer whose products comply with quality assurance certifications like ISO 9001 and VDA6.1.
Good Hope also employs state-of-the-art product design software to meet rising demand from buyers. The company's sought-after air compressor with detachable reset digital pressure gauge and torch has a unit price of US$12.50 FOB Hong Kong.
"In addition to its functional design, the product also possesses a modern look," Wong says, noting that the minimum order size starts at 1,000 pieces per model for shipment 45-60 days after order confirmation.
The company's 220,000-square-foot factory in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland exports products mainly to Europe and the US.
Three years ago, the company ventured into the mainland market through the marketing of its own BOREAS brand name.
Another reassuring supplier on the home front is Saicome Industries Ltd, which offers a wide range of power tools and garden tools for customers around the world. The company's cordless hammer drill driver launched early this year has a full reach capacity of up to 40mm.
"The unique selling point is that it can drill through wood, metal and walls. This is a special feature not commonly found in similar products," claims marketing manager Franki Leung.
"We require a minimum order of 1,000 pieces with the FOB Hong Kong pricing between US$30-60, depending on the add-on features or packaging."
Riding on its success in Europe and the US, Saicome plans to extend its reach to South America, including Brazil and Argentina, by tapping rising demand.
Established in 1990, the company has shifted most of its business profile from OEM to ODM, which now accounts for 80% of sales. Monthly production at its ISO 9001-certified Dongguan factory on the mainland is 50,000 units. Product delivery takes 60 days after order confirmation to major markets in Germany, Japan, North America, France and the UK.
Another manufacturer of home tools is Trade World Enterprise, which specialises in the production of handy and compact emergency tool kits for car users.
According to Thomas Lau, car emergency tool kits have evolved to become popular promotional gift items in Europe and Asia. "FOB (mainland) product prices are usually between US$3.50-5.00," he says.
The 13-year-old manufacturer owns a 20,000-square-foot factory in Hangzhou on the mainland. It plans to shift operations to a new plant soon to increase its production capacity.
It has a minimum order size of 2,000 pieces, with delivery to its major markets in Europe, the US and Southeast Asia taking 30-45 days.
Xiang Way Enterprises Ltd is a do-it-yourself (DIY) home refurbishing tools expert, making a range of paint brushes to satisfy the needs of most discerning customers.
General manager Nancy Siu says buyers from Europe and the US have different preferences in terms of handles and brush heads, driving the company to launch more specific products to meet their requirements.
The OEM manufacturer's pure Chinese bristle paint brush, model RB1057W, is well-known for its pencil point brush strokes in European markets, particularly France, while model PR3707H is a pattern roller that enables the DIY painter to create fancy wall designs.
Another model, 9450W, has been applauded by professional users since its launch last year, claims Siu. A blend of nylon and polyester bristles, this brush is tailor-made to achieve excellent painting results.
Founded in 1987, the company owns a 300-worker factory in Guangdong Province on the mainland. The minimum order size is 5,000 pieces and delivery takes 45 days after order confirmation. Major markets are the US and Europe.
Thus, Hong Kong manufacturers are fully tooled up to meet the hardware needs of the most discerning DIY enthusiast.
